GH throws a punch

FZ diverts it and targets his right hand towards GH's groin

GH's left 'perisai' reflexes FZ's right hand outwards while twitching his right hand inside towards FZ's jaw

FZ 'gayang' (sways) to the right throwing an outward divert to jab technique with his left hand

GH 'tarik lian' side stepping away from target and 'buang pukul luar' to punch FZ

FZ moves his body anticlockwise and left steps 90' to divert and punch GH

GH kicks FZ's knee joint while diverting the punch to 'break' it.

Pukulan, Lapis Pukulan dan Jatuhan 1

With this 1st posting this year and on behalf of all Gayang Lima practitioners, I wish everybody a blessed Maal Hijrah 1430 and A Happy New Year 2009. There is only one purpose for us to live in this world and that is to surrender to God AlMighty. To do that, we must know who we are, learn from those who know and seek for the truth with wisdom. May Allah guide us all. Ameen !

HR steps to punch NZ

NZ steps to the outer side of HR's right leg, his right hand diverts the punch with 'buang pukul luar' (not shown) instantaneously aiming towards HR's jaw while his left hand immediately do a 'tekan pukul luar' as a double blocking .


HR uses his 'perisai' to block NZ's right hand while rolling his right hand up to punch NZ.

Again NZ diverts the punch with a 'tekan pukul' and immediately throws his right hand towards HR's face

HR's does a double blocking technique which can go two ways either 'buang pukul luar' or 'buang pukul dalam'

While pulling his right leg back and putting his left leg forward, HR opts for 'buang pukul luar' and throws a left punh towards NZ's face

As swiftly, NZ just tops his left hand over HR's left hand and forwards a chlothline arm chop to HR's throat. NZ's right hand is pulled back to block further movements of HR's left hand.

With the momentum of HR's bodyweight and and NZ's counter chlothline attack, the fall is heavy...

Buah Pukul Tunggal 2

In Buah Pukul Tunggal 2 we see that the sweeping strike is done from outside. The shift of leg must be very fast, even before the opponent has put his step to the ground while throwing the punch. The pics below are just still illustrations.


ZR (left) throws a forward step punch


This time NZ swiftly shifts his right leg to the outer side of ZR's right leg to hook it back to his standing position. He chucks his left hand towards ZR's left neck slapping it to the opposite direction while his right hand diverts ZR's punch.

Buah Pukul Tunggal 1

In Gayang Lima, buah pukul tunggal means a single strike or hit. Buah Pukul Tunggal depicted in the pictures below show that three simultaneous strikes are done in one single move. As it is, even if only one hand is thrown as a punch, rapid follow ups of punches and kicks do follow as a precedent in the offensive concept of Gayang Lima, either in attack or defense.

NZ diverts the punch and simultaneously kicks ZR's inner leg while his left hand slaps ZR's upper body to the opposite direction


ZR falls and in the midst of falling NZ moves to attack ZR's head for the finishing touch

Counter strikes for lapis pukulan dalam

FZ (right) throws a right punch and GH counters with a 'buang pukul dalam' (left hand inner block and right hand punch)



FZ's left hand blocks GH's right punch while his right hand rolls to the inner side of GH's left hand with a swift attacking momentum to GH's jaw/face.



FZ rapidly follows the right jab with another left punch to GH's jaw/face.

MY (right) and TM in still and alert face up.

MY steps and throws a punch at TM.


TM moves his right leg 180' clockwise, diverts MY's punch with his right hand while simultaneously punching MY with his left hand.
MY switches his right leg to his left's position and steps his left leg 45' to the right. His right hand diverts TM's left punch while throwing his left punch at TM's face.

TM quickly makes an anticlockwise body turn and kicks MY's left leg while his left and right hands divert and jam MY's punch and neck.

MY falls easily due to the fulcrum effect while his left step stance was still not firmly set on the ground.

MY (left) is ready to attack TM


MY steps forward and throws a punch at TM.


TM steps anticlockwise 180' to his left, blocks MY's punch and throws a right punch at the same time.

MY will divert the punch and step forward with the intent of throwing a left punch to TM's face while his right hand will twitch to the inside of TM's left hand to follow up with another rapid right hook to the jaw.

However, TM moves both his hands in between MY's hands in a flicker, pull sweeps his right leg backwards while jamming MY's upper body forward by the neck to fall him down.

TM (right) throws a punch and MY sidesteps 45` to the front while simultaneously throwing a jab towards TM's face (feint attack).
TM diverts the jab with his right hand to throw a left punch towards MY's face.

MY swiftly pulls back his right leg to his initial standing position and stops the momentum of TM's left punch while jamming it towards the left of TM's neck. Concurrently, MY sweeps the outer right of TM's leg with his left leg to make TM fall (fulcrum effect).

TM falls and...wella!

Gayang Lima dalam Majalah Seni Beladiri Oktober 2008

Akhirnya, ditakdirkan jua Seni Silat Gayang Lima menghiasi muka depan dalam majalah Seni Beladiri edisi bulan Oktober, 2008. Sekurang kurangnya segala penat lelah dan pengorbanan Ayahanda Pak Atan selama lebih setengah abad mendapat pengiktirafan sebagai satu lagi bahan sejarah untuk tatapan umum dan generasi yang akan datang.

Niat dihati yang selama ini terpendam terkabul juga, Alhamdulillah. Terima kasih saya ucapkan kepada team Majalah Seni Beladiri pimpinan Guru Azlan Ghanie, Cikgu Fuad, Guru Dahlan Karim dan semua mereka yang terlibat dari segi inisiatif mengadakan pertemuan, memberi dan menerima maklumat sehingga terbit satu lagi bahan ilmu dalam khazanah dunia persilatan Melayu.

Ada ramai lagi anak anak buah Pak Atan yang otai tetapi tidak disebutkan nama mereka dalam artikel tersebut seperti Cikgu Haroon Salim, Cikgu Mat Kecik, Cikgu Man Putupiring, Cikgu Irwan, Cikgu Sham, Cikgu Mazlan dan lain lain. Saya sebutkan nama nama mereka dalam blog sebagai pengiktirafan dimana secara langsung saya pernah mendapat tunjuk ajar dan berlatih bersama sama dengan mereka. Tidak lupa juga kepada Guru Raja Ali yang pesat mengembangkan Gayang Lima diBatu Pahat dan pelusuk Negeri Johor.

Mengikut sejarah Gayang Lima pernah diajarkan kepada askar Timbalan Setia Negeri Johor pada zaman Alamarhum Sultan Ibrahim oleh Allahyarham Awang Daik sekitar tahun 1920an. Askar TSNJ masih wujud sekarang ini sebagai pengawal Istana Kesultanan Johor. Allahyarham bapa saya pernah menjadi Pegawai Pemerintah disana dari tahun 1962 hingga 1980. Namun sejak sebelum perkhidamatan beliau lagi sudah tidak ada kesinambungan ilmu Buah Pukul Gayang Lima dalam TSNJ. Adalah menjadi hasrat saya agar zaman kegemilangan Gayang Lima kembali menjadi amalan dan silibus dalam TSNJ.

Sesuai dengan pegangan kita umat Islam, Kepada Allah Berserah. Yang tersirat pasti akan tersurat. Wallahua'lam.
